Muse Daily: Oct 1 — Muse's First Month by the Numbers: 5 Million Downloads, 8GB of Memory Each

Meta's Muse has been out for barely three weeks, and the numbers already look like a launch for the record books, with a few asterisks worth knowing about. Here's the month in figures, what they actually mean, and the one number that explains why Meta is in such a hurry to make money from this.

The headline numbers

Let's start with the scoreboard. According to Sensor Tower estimates reported on September 30, Muse crossed 5 million US downloads in 22 days. For context, ChatGPT took 56 days to reach the same mark, Grok took 103, and Claude took 492. Only 23 apps in Sensor Tower's records have ever hit 5 million US downloads that fast, and about 85 percent of them were mobile games like Fortnite and Pokemon Go. Among non-games, the company is now mentioned alongside Disney+, HBO Max, and Threads.

The usage numbers behind the downloads are arguably more interesting. Internal data reviewed by The Information shows more than 3 million people now give Muse at least one prompt a week, and over a million do it daily. More than 4 million interact with it weekly in some form, including approving actions. Two weeks in, daily active users were around 642,000. That's a real user base, not just a download spike.

The stock market noticed. Meta shares rose about 29% in September, the company's best month since 2013, per AI Times citing CNBC — and briefly topped $740 intraday. Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo raised their price targets. Wells Fargo's take, citing Sensor Tower: Meta has "secured a powerful narrative for monetizing its massive AI infrastructure spend," with Muse as the proof that subscriptions and API revenue can diversify the company beyond advertising. Korean outlet DataNews, citing the Wall Street Journal, reported the flip side of that same story: banks and brokerages sold off as investors priced in Muse's automatic deposit-switching features eroding cheap deposits — the KBW bank index down 3%, Charles Schwab down 6%, LPL down 7%.

The asterisks

Now the fine print, because downloads aren't users and users aren't revenue.

First, Meta bought a lot of this growth. Sensor Tower found that Meta began ramping Muse advertising on September 16: downloads spiked 73% day-over-day — and Muse took up to 50% of Meta's daily house-ad impressions from September 14 to 27, across Facebook and WhatsApp. Ranking among the top 15 US brands by ad impressions in late September is not an organic miracle. It's a launch budget.

Second, the jump from download to habit is unproven. The Information's numbers show strong weekly engagement, but the question analysts keep asking is whether this converts into the $20-to-$100-a-month paid tiers Meta is reportedly planning. Bank of America analysts said revenue from ads, subscriptions, or commissions inside Muse is unlikely to become material before 2028. Downloads are the invitation; retention is the party.

Third, competition arrived fast. OpenAI unveiled its always-on agent "Dots" at its September 29 dev day. Google is pushing its own agent push. A startup called Instinct reportedly raised $1 billion at a $10 billion valuation. The agent race went from one player to a crowd in about three weeks.

The number that explains the urgency: 8GB per user

Here's my favorite figure from the whole month, and it's not about downloads. According to Tom's Hardware, citing analyst Tae Kim's analysis, each Muse user gets a virtual machine with an AMD CPU, 8GB of memory, and about 100GB of storage. Eight gigabytes of DRAM per user, roughly the memory in a budget smartphone — provisioned for every single person.

Think about what that means at 5 million users. Every new user is like shipping another low-end phone's worth of memory demand into Meta's data centers. One analyst put it plainly: the longer agents keep sessions alive, the more memory, storage, and networking the whole inference system consumes. TrendForce now expects the DRAM market to hit $618.7 billion in 2026 and grow 46% in 2027, partly on agentic AI demand.

This is why the monetization question isn't academic. A chatbot that answers questions is cheap to run. An agent that keeps a virtual computer warm for you around the clock is not. Meta is spending an estimated $130-145 billion on AI infrastructure this year. The 8GB-per-user figure is the clearest explanation of why: agentic AI is an infrastructure business wearing an app's clothes.

What to watch

If you're following Muse as a user rather than an investor, here's the short list I'd keep an eye on:

  • Weekly active users, not downloads. The Information's 3-million-weekly figure is the number that matters. If it keeps climbing without ad support, the habit is real.
  • The paid tier announcement. $20 to $100 a month is the rumored range. What you get for it — and whether the free tier stays useful — will decide whether this is a product or a promotion.
  • The revenue mix. Wells Fargo's bull case is subscriptions plus API and transaction commissions. Watch which one Meta talks about first.
  • Your own usage. The cheapest way to evaluate the hype is to run one real workflow through the agent for a week and see if you miss it when you stop.

My take

The launch numbers are genuinely impressive, and the 5-million-in-22-days stat deserves its place in the record books. But I'd read this month as a successful opening act, not a coronation. Meta bought reach with house ads, the infrastructure bill is enormous, and the competition is no longer theoretical. The most important number isn't 5 million downloads. It's 8 gigabytes per user, ticking away in a data center, waiting to be paid for.
